The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife recently released information regarding wild turkey and white-tailed deer hunting in the state.

Division staff announced special deer archery hunts on nine state scenic river properties later this year and a proposal to reduce the bag limit for the 2022 Spring Wild Turkey season.

The special archery hunts will be offered through local lottery drawings.

Hunters must attend individual meetings for particular hunts where they can enter the drawing by purchasing a $5 ticket per property. Names will be drawn randomly, and those selected will be permitted to choose a two-week hunt period.

An orientation will be conducted immediately following the drawing, outlining special regulations for the hunts. Hunters will be permitted to hunt with a partner, though the partner is not required to attend the drawing or orientation.

Hunters must present a valid 2021-2022 hunting license to purchase tickets.

Hunt locations and drawing dates are:

Little Miami River (Deerfield Gorge, Caesar Creek, Hall’s Creek and Roxanna), Aug. 17 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Ceasar Creek Visitors Center, 4020 North Clarksville Road in Waynesville.

Big and Little Darby Creek (Terra Nova, Milford Center, Agnes Andreae and Little Darby Forrest Preserve), Aug. 26 in Pastime Park, 344 N. Chillicothe Street in Plain City.

Stillwater River (Abshire-Graves, Cool-Davis), Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Barn at Stillwater Prairie, 9750 Ohio 185 in Covington.

Tickets will be available for purchase from 5:15 to 6:20 p.m. at each location. Drawings will follow at 6:30.

The proposed reduction from two to one bearded turkey for the 2022 Spring Wild Turkey season is in response to declining wild turkey populations over the past few years.

The proposal was made by Division of Wildlife staff to the Ohio Wildlife Council at its regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 4.

If approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council, all hunters will be limited to one bearded (male) turkey during the spring 2022 hunting season and the youth spring hunting season.

Comments about the proposed wild turkey season limit change will be accepted at wildohio.gov.

No changes were proposed to the 2022 spring wild turkey hunting season dates, zones (south and northeast), hours, or methods of take. Further, no changes were proposed to Ohio’s fall 2021 wild turkey hunting season.
