Couple walking to fire scene killed when struck by fire truck
Victims, age 72, were parents of homeowner whose residence was on fire
WASHINGTON COUNTY - The parents of a homeowner whose residence was on fire Thursday night were killed when they were struck by a fire truck providing mutual aid at the scene on County Road 9 in Washington County.
William A. Reed, 72, and Carolyn B. Reed, 72, of Marietta, were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported the Reeds were struck by a Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department pumper driven by Keith Willhide, 51, a resident of the West Virginia village near Marietta.
Willhide was not injured but was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
A trooper with the patrol's Marietta post reported Willhide was backing a 2015 fire truck down County Road 9 in Marietta Township when it struck the Reeds as they walked on the roadway.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:51 p.m.
The residence reportedly sustained extensive damage.
