SUGARCREEK Buckeye Trail Highs golf team continued what has been a banner season on the links by finishing second in the Division III Sectional Tournament at Willandale Golf Club on Tuesday to qualify for next weeks district action.

Coach Mike Castellos Warriors will be joined by sectional champion Garaway and Malvern as teams moving on to the district. Garaway won the team title with a 326 score, with Trail as the runner-up at 341 and Malvern third with a 342.

This is the first time weve had a team make it to the district, said Castello. Having three seniors and a junior, it was just our time to do something this year and I think were peaking at the right time.

Everything from here on is gravy now, he added.

Trail adds the sectional title to its list of accomplishments which also includes the OVAC Class 3A crown, the Pioneer Valley Conference title and a runner-up finish in the Ohio Valley Golf League.

Castello said his team was able to overcome tough weather conditions as well as some early nerves to advance.

We were a little tight at the start, but got it together on the back nine, said the BTHS coach. The course was very tough. The wind was pretty bad and the greens were real fast, but the kids did a great job.

Leading Trail to its victory was Justin Wilson, who was one of four players to share medalist honors with a 77. Other quad-medalists were Jon Mason of Garaway, Austin Eckhardt of Strasburg and Shon Smith of Fort Frye.

Smith and Eckhardt both qualified for the district as individuals along with Austin Meronoff of Steubenville Catholic.

Backing Wilsons effort for Trail was Jesi Roe, who carded an 83; Jed Burga, who shot 87; and Austin Warehime, who posted a 94.

Behind the trio of district-qualifying teams were Steubenville Catholic (349), Hiland (350), Strasburg (350), Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans (356), Bridgeport (356), Tuscarawas Central Catholic (360), Ridgewood (361), Shadyside (370), Conotton Valley (380), Fort Frye (383), Beallsville (441), Newcomerstown (441), River (442), Toronto (443), Monroe Central (460) and Barnesville (472).

Barnesvilles low man was Sam Leach, who shot a 97. Other Shamrock scores included Jacob Carpenter (114), Aspen Bauman (126), Raenah Norris (135).

Leading Newcomerstown at the sectional was Jarrod Brooks, who finished with an 89. The rest of the Trojan scores included Zach Gibson (104), Cody Rothacher (120) and Tance Brandon (120).
