Union Local edges Barnesville, 46-42BARNESVILLE -- The Barnesville Shamrocks may have been the ones wearing green, however it was visiting Belmont County rival Union Local that played the role of "Grinch" on Tuesday, rallying from a 17-point halftime deficit to steal the Shamrocks' final game before Christmas, 46-42, pushing Barnesville's losing streak to four games."We told the team not to be too happy (at halftime)," lamented Barnesville coach Chris Pack. "We have just been Jekyl and Hyde the last four times out. You can't miss the shots we missed and miss foul shots like we did and win basketball games. They call them "free throws" for a reason -- they are supposed to be freebies."We just have to get back in the gym and work on our foul shots and make shots," continued Pack. "All you can do is hope you're not playing like this in February. You play these games in December to identify your weaknesses. We know there isn't anybody on our schedule we can't beat and we know there isn't anybody who can't beat us."For the game, the Shamrocks (3-4) finished 10-27 from the charity stripe. Both teams were ice-cold to start the game, with the Shamrocks finding the bottom of the net on an inside shot by Bryson Stephen and ensuing free throw. This gave the hosts a lead that they held until the final minute of the contest. The Jets (3-2) stuck back on the next trip down the floor on a shot by Myron Jellison, but Stephen owned the lane in the first for five points as Barnesville was up 10-4 after the initial eight minutes.Barnesville continued the onslaught in the second with Preston Dornon canning a pair of three-pointers and Christian Bailey sinking all four of his attempts from the free-throw line. Dornon finished the frame with 10 points, while the visitors hit just one field goal, trailing 18-7 at the break. In the first half, the Jets were a paltry 2-of-19 from the floor with Tyler Fitzpatrick snaring eight caroms for the hosts. The second half was a totally different ballgame. The Jets' defense forced the hosts into 3-of-12 shooting from the floor and benefited from an 0-of-6 showing from the free throw line, while Jellison distributed the ball for three three-pointers between Jacob Bailey and Kevin Vanline as the Jets outscored Barnesville 13-7 in the third to close the gap to 34-24.In the final quarter, the proverbial rails came off the sleigh for Barnesville. With opportunities to ice the game, Barnesville was 2-of-9 on free throw attempts and hit just four shots from the floor, while the Jets continued to roar back. Bailey and Tyler McGary hit three's to open the frame and after bringing the game to a two-point deficit, McGary drilled a "bonus" goal from the corner with 58 seconds remaining for the Jets' first lead of the game.Poor shooting from the line and a rebounded miss on a free throw getting errantly tossed to the backcourt sealed the deal, as the Jets claimed the four-point win.The visitors saw three players in double figures, led by McGary's 14. Bailey added 13 and Jellison contributed 11.Preston Dornon was the lone Shamrock in double figures with 19, while Stephen finished with nine. Fitzpatrick snared 14 rebounds.UNION LOCAL 46, BARNESVILLE 42Union Local (3-2)Myron Jellison 4-12 3-4 11; Ethan Tobin 0-3 2-4 2; Robert Rutter 0-1 0-0 0; Tyler McGary 2-8 8-10 14; Jacob Bailey 5-11 0-1 13; Curtis Ogilbee 0-6 1-2 1; Kevin Vanline 2-3 0-0 5; Paul DeMarchi 0-1 0-0 0; Shadow Montag 0-0 0-0 0.
