Shamrock Volleyball Team hoping to keep up momentumDonnie Yeager Jr.Special to The EnterpriseBARNESVILLE -- Entering her fifth year, Barnesville High volleyball coachNikki McEndree will look for her team to keep some of the momentum in had at the end of last season. After stumbling out of the block 2-6, McEndree's team recovered to go 8-12.Although that team lost seven to graduation, Barnesville will still have a wealth of experience. Heading the list of the graduated are all-District 12 first teamer Allison Plumly, who also played in the OVAC and District 12 all star games. Also gone are Samantha Jefferis, Jenna Miller, Kayla Truax, Samantha Ackerman, Kate Grimes and Kim Baker. The Lady 'Rocks will return four letterwinners to the fold, three of them seniors. Starter Mackensie Touville is a 5-9 middle hitter who was first team all-OVAC and second team all-District 12 last season, and led her team in aces last year. Mariah Menges is a 5-6 setter who was an OVAC and District 12 honorable mention. The senior is due back in September after an ankle injury during the softball season. She was the team leader in sets last season. The third monogram owner is Brandi Bahmer. The 5-9 senior will start at outside hitter. "Brandi was a middle hitter last season, but we mover her because she hits much harder from the outside," noted McEndree.Heidi Hines is the final letterman. The 5-9 junior outside hitter earned a starting position midway through last season, and has done nothing but solidify that position. The rest of the starting lineup consists of 5-7 senior Aubrey Moore, who will be an outside hitter and play on the front row at times, 6-0 junior Katy Hickenbottom, who will be a middle hitter, and 5-0 freshman setter Paige Gibbons. Leanna Froelich is the final senior on the team. The 5-1 defensive specialist figures to spell Bahmer in the back row.Jennifer Clouse is a 5-3 junior setter, and is joined by fellow classmate Jessica Clary. The 5-4 defensive specialist figures to log significant time as the libero. Other juniors who will dress for the varsity are 5-4 setter/hitter Mariya Fitzpatrick and Kalee Temple, a 5-4 middle hitter."We are looking to stay consistent and I believe keeping our focus will be the key to success this year," stated McEndree. "We are playing six players with little or no varsity experience. I am looking for our returning starters to step up early and lead this team."Fitzpatrick and Temple will also log time on the junior varsity squad. The remaining JV team members are sophomores Jessica Hunkler (5-6 outside hitter), Devyn Yager (5-6, setter), Morganne Warfield (5-7 middle hitter), Courtney Miller (5-7 middle hitter), Samantha Shamhart (5-2 defensive specialist) and Samantha Jefferis (5-5 outside hitter); and freshman Marissa Burga (5-8 outside hitter).
