Lady Jets downed by Monroe Central at tournament
Monroe Central opened the Division III girls' sectional tournament hosted by Cambridge High School with a 44-26 win over the Union Local Lady Jets Wednesday, Feb. 18 to advance to the finals to face Blear on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. for a berth in the district tournament at Steubenville.
Following a close first half, the Lady Seminoles (18-3) used a strong second half performance to pull away for the win. Monroe Central jumped to a 12-7 opening quarter lead, but the Lady Jets posted a 9-7 second quarter scoring advantage to cut the halftime deficit to 19-16.
The third quarter remained close with the Lady 'Noles outscoring Union Local 7-5 as the teams went to the final frame separated by just a 26-21 score.
The final eight minutes, the Lady Seminoles erupted for 18 points while limiting the Lady Jets to just five to claim the 44-26 win going away.
Monroe Central hit 16-of-38 field shots for 42 percent and added 7-of-12 from the foul line. Karlie Davis paced the Lady 'Noles with 18 points followed by Aleisha Guiler with 11 and Alex Kuhn with 10 markers. The Lady Seminoles pulled down 26 rebounds paced by Aleisha Guiler and Davis with four each. Guiler also picked off three of the 10 steals with Kuhn adding a pair. Kim Lafferre dished out four of the 14 assist with Justine LaFollette adding three as the victors turned the ball over 13 times.
Union Local bows out of tournament play at 1-20 connecting on 10 floor shots and 2-of-7 from the bonus line. Sarah Minnich paced the Lady Jets with eight points, while Makenzie Barr added five.
