The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Starling Marte to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, the Pirates received a pair of 19-year-old prospects, pitcher Brennen Malone and shortstop Liover Peguero. Marte’s days in Pittsburgh were numbered as soon as new general manager, Ben Cherington, arrived mid-November. His trade value was at a high and rumors have been going around for a couple years of a potential trade. Trading Marte isn’t a problem - it’s just the haul we got back. The two prospects "possess significant upside," according to Cherington, but won’t be ready for the Majors for a few years. We also got a shortstop, a position where we already have three players at the Major League level. I just figured if we’re giving up the only link we have left from the 2013-2015 postseason runs, a move which I agree with, we would get some prospects that are either Major League ready or won’t be blocked from playing because their current position is already taken up on the Major League roster.
