SALEM -- Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) announced that Alexis Logan, a senior at Union Local High School in Belmont County, will represent his office in the United States Capitol as a winner in the 2019 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.
"Thank you to all of the students who participated in this year’s art competition, and congratulations to Alexis, who was selected as the winner from our district," Johnson said. "Again this year, I was truly in awe of the quality, variety, and creativity of the art we received. On days I am in Washington, I walk from my office to vote on the House floor and pass right by the display of all the winning pieces from across United States. I’d put our winners up against any from the entire country.
"I congratulate Ms. Logan on this major accomplishment, and commend the schools who participated in the 2019 competition," he said.
Ms. Logan’s artwork, titled, "Innocence Lost," was done using charcoal (picture attached to this email). She described the work as an "emotional piece of a little girl with windblown hair and wild eyes." As a district winner, Alexis is invited to participate in a ceremony in June in Washington D.C. with the other congressional district winners from around the country. Southwest Airlines graciously donated two air tickets to each district winner to be used for travel to and from the ceremony with a parent. Residents of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio will be able to view her work while on guided tours of the Capitol building.
The students’ artwork was judged by a panel the week of April 29. This is the seventh time in the last nine years that the 6th Congressional District Art Competition winner is a student at Union Local High School.
"I’m just about out of praise worthy comments for Lisa Marple and her art students at Union Local," Johnson remarked. "I think I’ve used them all over the last few years. But again, it is not a coincidence that so many of Lisa’s students have taken home the top prize."
