According to Barnesville Village Administrator Roger Deal, the bridge deck on the E. South Street bridge had deteriorated to where bridge replacement was being required.
Rather than replace a bridge that was no longer needed, the village chose to install a concrete box culvert that would allow for safe travel on E. South Street, as well as pedestrian and Amish buggy travel.
The bridge was constructed with a hump in the roadway to allow the trains to pass under the roadway which of course is no longer needed, Deal said. This hump did not provide for clear view of traffic in the area and was a dangerous section of roadway. This project will improve view and safety.
The project was designed by Engineer Ben Russell of Hull & Associates.
The contractor is McConnell Contracting of West Lafayette and is at a cost of $333,474.50.
Work should be completed within the next 30 days.
