Third time’s a charm. That old adage held true for the 3rd Annual Brad Detling Memorial Ridge Runner Classic (BDMRRC). A record 180 participants gathered Saturday morning, August 24, at Barnesville High School to take part in the 5K race. The event even drew participants from as far away as Wisconsin, Florida, and Virginia.  In addition, countless volunteers, family members, and spectators turned out to enjoy the fantastic weather and support a great cause.
The BDMRRC was established in 2011 to honor the memory of Brad Detling. Brad was a 1999 Barnesville High School graduate and 2005 The Ohio State University alumna who lost a brave battle with cancer in November of 2008.
The proceeds collected from the race go toward an annual scholarship that is awarded to one or more deserving and qualified Barnesville High School senior(s) planning to continue his or her education at the collegiate level. Last year the BDMRRC gave out $6,000 in scholarship monies and made a $500 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer.
The BDMRRC is a unique event in that it offers the competitiveness of a typical 5K race with a 5K run and 5K walk, but we also have a non-competitive walk category in which participants can sign up and walk as much or as little as they would like. The idea is to get everyone involved, no matter what their fitness level.
Results for the 2013 5K run and walk are posted on the BDMRRC official Facebook page as well as on The Race Deal (
