Union Local early dismissal

There will be a two-hour early dismissal in all school buildings on Friday, Dec. 19. High school and middle school will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. and the elementary school at 1:10 p.m. for parent pick-ups and 1:15 p.m. for buses.

Boys basketball site change

The seventh, eighth, and ninth grade boys basketball games against Bellaire on Thursday, Dec. 18, will be played in the Barnesville Middle School Gymnasium to accommodate the elementary school Christmas Program. The seventh grade boys' basketball game will begin at 5 p.m.

Somerton UMC youth play

Somerton United Methodist Church invites all to join us on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m. for the Youth Play "Christmas County Spelling Bee", followed by the Adult Christmas Cantata, "Hope Has Hands", featuring choirs from both the Jerusalem UMC and Somerton UMC.

NARFE meeting

NARFE Chapter #2175 will hold their annual Christmas Party and Dinner at Bonanza Restaurant, St. Clairsville, Ohio at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19.

The Belmont County Educational Service Center Governing Board will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday, Dec. 18, at 10:30 a.m., in the Belmont County Educational Service Center Office, 101 N. Market Street, Suite C, St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Benefit for Brad Detling

On Dec. 20, local rock band "Digby" will reunite for a performance at the Elks club from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. Proceeds will go to the family of Brad Detling. The members of the group will perform classic rock songs as well as hard rock songs from the 90's. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Oakleigh Garden Club meets

Oakleigh Garden Club members will meet for their annual Christmas covered dish supper at the home of Linda Ellis, 108 Maple Ave., Bethesda, on Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Roll call will be my favorite Christmas carol and devotions will be given by Marilyn Stalder. The program will be a White Elephant Sale and each member is requested to bring items to be auctioned.

NOEL Cantata

The Praise Team of Trinity Gospel Fellowship, 71101 Flushing-Morristown Road, Flushing, OH, will present the cantata "NOEL" on Sunday evening, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. A candle light service will be held. All are welcome to attend. Come be blessed, and stay for cookies and fellowship.

Elks Family Christmas Party

The Elks Lodge #1699 Family Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. in the grill area of the Elks Lodge on North Chestnut Street, Barnesville.

This is a covered dish dinner. The Lady Elks will provide the meat, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, and dinner rolls. Also, provided will be table service, punch and coffee.

Santa Clause will be our guest and will present each child with a treat bag.

Gospel Sing Dec. 31

A New Year's Eve Gospel Sing will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Pritchard-Laughlin Civic Center in Cambridge. Admission is free. Bethesda Home Decorating Contest

Judging for the annual Christmas home decorating contest sponsored by Oakleigh Garden Club will begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 18. There will be four categories: Religious; Overall; Child's Delight and Best Door. First place winners in each category will be awarded $25 and there will be up to four honorable mentions in each category. The distance for judging will be within the city limits of Bethesda.

Judges for this year's event will be Mary Jo Warner and Trista Warner, both from Byesville. Only the judges will be responsible for selecting the winners in each category.

Benefit for Don McCort

There will be a cancer benefit for Don "Rat" McCort on Dec. 13, at the Barnesville Eagles starting at 5 p.m. There will be food, auction, gun raffle, and 50/50. Entertainment by Smokescreen band. Christmas Cantata

First Baptist Church of 94 Shady Lane, Barnesville invites you to join us on Sunday, Dec.14 at 7 p.m. for Christmas Cantata and Kids' Choir specials.

First, the Kids' Choir will delight you with some Christmas songs. Don't miss out on this blessing as these adorable children sing.

Then the Adult Choir will present, "I'll be Home for Christmas", a cantata by Sue C. Smith & Russell Mauldin.

Say the word "home," especially at Christmas time, and memories of special family traditions spring to mind. Our fondest memories may involve singing carols that signal the start of the Christmas season. Celebrating those songs is one tradition we could trace back for many generations.

Square Dance Dec. 12

Barnesville American Legion

The Barnesville American Legion Aux. will be having their annual Christmas Party on Dec, 11. The regular meeting will start at 7 p.m. with the party beginning after. The meat and rolls will be provided, please bring a covered dish. A $10 gift exchange for those who wish to participate.


The Belmont County WIC program will sponsor walk-in clinics on Tuesdays in St. Clairsville and on Wednesdays in Bellaire. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. New clients need proof of address, proof of income and identification such as a drivers license or a social security card. Crib cards will be accepted for newborns. Clients who need recertified will need proof of income and their WIC folders. Also, a written authorization from a parent/guardian to have a child receive WIC services is needed if a parent/guardian is not with a child at the time of recertification. Belmont County WIC is having open enrollment the months of November and December. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that encourages breastfeeding and provides education to its clients. Art and Craft Show

The Local Artists Show and Holiday Sale will take place in the Commons Area of the Main Building at the Washington State Community College, in Marietta, Ohio. The College is on Colgate Drive. There is plenty of parking and admission is free.

The show will be open Friday, Dec. 12 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There are some very talented and creative artists and craftsmen in the local area. Here is an opportunity to purchase some unique and distinctive hand made gifts from seventeen of them.

Longaberger Basket Raffle

Barnesville Girls Basketball is currently selling chances on a Longaberger Street Basket valued at $250. Cost to the tickets will be $1 each or six for $5. Tickets can be purchased from any team member or officer. Tickets will also be sold at the High School during the girls home games up until the day of the drawing which will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, at halftime of the girls varsity game.

Shadyside VFD Paramedic Refresher

Belmont Technical College has scheduled an Ohio 48 hour Paramedic refresher course to be held on Saturdays Sundays at Shadyside VFD in January 2009. The class is scheduled for January 3, 4, 10, 11, 18, 24, with class times from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p .m. each day.

Main St. UMC R.O.C.K. Youth Group

Belmont County Coat Closet

The Coat Closet of Belmont County is open Monday and Friday from 3-5 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Bellaire Christian Church on 3665 Belmont Street in Bellaire. Coats are free for those in need. One new coat is provided each year and sizes range from infant to adult. Donations are accepted and can include monetary, gently worn or new coats. The Belmont United Methodist Church announces the second year for our R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Christ's Kids) Program. ABLE and BTC Classes

Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) and Belmont Technical College are pleased to announce a new partnership to encourage success - free ABLE classes that will meet every Thursday, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon.

ABLE GED Test Preparation

The ABLE program offers free GED test preparation classes for adult learners who wish to obtain a high school diploma equivalency. Cambridge Youth Basketball Tournament

The Cambridge Christmas Basketball Classic will be hosted at Cambridge High School Dec. 12-14. The event is for girls and boys in grades fourth, fifth and sixth. The tournament has a three game guarantee and teams will be divided by gender and grade. The cost of the tournament is $125.
