LET'S RING IN 2011AS THE weekend approaches, have you made plans to welcome in the new year? Years ago our family gave up New Year's Eve partying. The reasons were two-fold - the kids wanted to be up early to watch the TV specials and parades, and their father wanted to be well rested to watch a full day of college football. Then there was the tradition of a pork and sauer kraut dinner.WHILE COLLEGE bowl games prevail well into the new year, Buckeye fans will have to wait until Tuesday, January 4th at 8 p.m. That late hour is not popular with those who have to get up early the next day for school or work.WHEN A new month begins, readers of this space know that I always consult two reference sources - The Old Farmer's Almanac and Hal Borland's TWELVE MOON S OF THE YEAR. What follows was taken from those sources."JANUARY IS Winter, no doubt about it. It can be cold, raw, bitter, and icy, edged with a wind that chills the marrow and congeals the blood."WE WILL gain 48 minutes of daylight in January, but early risers might not agree. That's because the sunrise gain is only 14 minutes while the sunset lengthens 34 minutes.THE NIGHT after the Sugar Bowl on the 4th, according to the Almanac, is Twelfth Night followed by Epiphany on the 6th. Noah Webster takes exception. He defines Twelfth Night as "The evening of January 6, the feast of Epiphany, the concluding period of medieval Christmas festivities, less correctly, the eve of the Epiphany, or January 5." Take your pick. For many years it was a goal I set for putting away all the holiday decorations or at least cease turning on the Christmas lights.MARTIN LUTHER King, Jr's birthday holiday is on Monday, January 17.THIS MONTH'S full moon falls on the 19th. It's called the Wolfe Moon because that is the time for hungry wolfpacks to get active.JANUARY IS one of the least busy months for most, so it could be a good time to make and begin carrying out those New Year's resolutions.jeanealities is compiled by Jean Palmer Davies, lifetime Barnesville Enterprise associate.
