Visiting Martins Ferry pushed across a run in the top of the third inning and pitcher Austin Bassa made it stand up by tossing a shutout to lead the Purple Riders to a 1-0 upset of Barnesville in Division III Sectional Tournament play Tuesday at Memorial Park.

Coach DJ Butler's Shamrocks entered the game as the No. 4 seed while the Purple Riders were the No. 9 seed, but what turned out to be a pitchers' duel went the way of the visiting Ferrians. While Ferry moves into the D-III District semifinals with a 15-12 record, Barnesville closes out a solid season with a 19-8 record.

"I told the guys we won the OVAC regular season championship; made it to the finals in the tournament and won 19 games, so there's a lot for them to hang their hat on," said Butler, "but for me, I'm left with somewhat of an empty feeling to be out already."

Ferry got the game's only run in the third frame when Cory Miklas singled and advanced to second when he was picked off but reached safely when the ball was dropped. Jake Johnson followed with an RBI single to plate Miklas with what proved to be the winning tally.

Bassa tossed a complete-game shutout for the Ferrians, striking out six and walking one.

Gaetan Sinisgalli was the tough-luck loser for the 'Rocks, fanning nine and walking three in five-plus innings. Zach Thompson came on in the sixth in a bases-loaded situation and worked out of the jam thanks in part to a double-play. Thompson notched four Ks and one walk.

Cade Hannahs and Brady Treherne collected Barnesville's two hits.
