During the past seven days the Barnesville High School swimmers have traveled to Wheeling, Steubenville, Wellsburg and Dover to swim in four meets with very good results. On Saturday, Dec. 1 the team went to Wheeling Jesuit University to participate for the twelfth time in the 12th Annual Red Devil Pentathlon.
This has been a meet that we always felt was a good one for the new swimmers on the team. Everyone could swim and the events were all just 50 yards (sprints), said coach Bobbi Jo Johnson. There were six girls teams and five boys teams. The boys and girls both came in third behind St. Clairsville and Cambridge.
On Tuesday the team traveled north to Steubenville High School where the team won their first meet of the season against Steubenville and East Richland. On Thursday, they again traveled north to Wellsburg and the home of the Brooke Bruins. There the girls team came in second just behind Brooke, but ahead of Martins Ferry.
These two meets said a lot about our team. The Steubenville meet was the first actual meet with high school events for our seven freshman. At times there was a little confusion, but at the end everyone stepped up and swam well, often swimming events they were not sure about. Johnson added.
On Saturday Dec. 8, the team traveled to Dover for the twelfth time for the Dover Invitational. With 14 teams participating, the girls finished sixth behind Dover, Cochocton, Cambridge, St. C and Orrville. The boys finished ninth. For the boys, senior Christopher Baker won the 500 freestyle against tough competition from Riverview.
