Union Local defeats Shenandoah, 5-3

Stranding runners proved to be the downfall of the Shenandoah High baseball team in their Division III Sectional Tournament clash against Union Local at Don Coss Field on Saturday, as the Zeps fell by a 5-3 score on Saturday.

Shenandoah (11-3) left nine "ducks on the pond" in the two-run loss despite logging 10 hits.

The pitching win went to Union Local's (9-6) Cameron Smith, who teamed up with Myron Jellison to strike out three batters and walk three.

Brandon Starr took the loss for the Zeps, fanning eight batters and walking five before James Luyster came on in the seventh inning to strike out a pair.

The Jets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Tyler Grant singled to drive in Jellison with the first run and then Richie Delbridge then ripped a double to plate Grant and Bernie Thompson.

Shenandoah responded in the second frame when Seth Thompson singled to drive in Shane Crum, who had reached base on a walk before advancing to third via a Kalob Davis double.

The Zeps knotted the game at 3-3 by scoring two more times in the fourth.

Seth Thompson recorded his second RBI of the day when he hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Crum, who had made his way to third on a single and another Davis double.

Three batters later, senior Brett Farnsworth hit a single to bring Seth Thompson across the plate, making it 3-3.

A Tyler McGary run in the fifth inning and another run by Jellison in the seventh proved too much for the Zeps to overcome.

"We had every chance to win it," Shenandoah coach Kevin Davis lamented. "It was our old nemesis, stranded baserunners. Union Local is a good team with good pitching.

"Starr pitched a good game for us," the SHS coach continued. "It was just one of those games that, unfortunately, somebody's got to lose."

McGary tallied a double and a single for the Jets, while Jellison tripled and Tobin accounted for two singles.

Davis' pair of doubles led the Zeps, while Farnsworth, Crum and Thompson each singled twice.

Union Local will take on Fort Frye for the sectional championship on Thursday at 5 p.m.
