Crooks, Jefferis advance to OHSAA state tournament

Barnesville' s Kody Crooks and Kurtis Jefferis competing at the state level, having both earned spots in this week's OHSAA State Wresting Tournament thanks to efforts at the Division II District at Claymont and the Division III District at Heath on Saturday.

In Division III at Heath, Crooks decisioned Jared Wilson of Amanda-Clearcreek by a 5-3 score and Jefferis earned an injury default win over Nelsonville-York's Zach Mays at 152 pounds.

Crooks also recorded a first round pin over Lucas Hollis of Harvest Prep (1:54), followed by a 5-3 decision over Derek Posey of Utica.

At 152 pounds, Barnesville's Kurtis Jefferis suffered a 6-5 decision to Sean Prather of West Jefferson in the finals to settle for the runner-up spot Jefferis opened with a first round pin (1:18) of Wellston's Anthony Fleming followed by a pin of Tyler Van Horn of Amanda-Clearcreek (3:36) in quarterfinal action.

In the team Division III team standings, West Jefferson claimed the top spot with 174.5 points followed by Nelsonville-York with 88.5 in the second slot.

Locally, Caldwell finished in 13th place with 49.5 points; Barnesville was 15th with 49 points and Newcomerstown was 34th with 13.
