Caldwell second to Harrison in Barnesville Invitational Shamrocks' Jefferis named outstanding wrestler

BARNESVILLE -- Four local wrestlers walked away individual champions and Caldwell High placed second at the 36th annual Barnesville Invitational on Saturday.

Harrison Central overwhelmed the field on its way to victory by racking up 177 points. Caldwell finished as the runner-up with 123 points followed by Martins Ferry (120.5), St. Clairsville (111) and Cambridge (109).

Caldwell's Jeremy Border placed first in the 103-pound division, defeating Harrison Central's Darin Heavlin by major decision in the championship.

In earlier rounds, Border defeated East Liverpool's Kaleb Riggle by pinfall at 3:18 and Clinton-Massie's Alex Nedved by pinfall at 5:15.

At 112 pounds, Cambridge's Andrew Bertubin pulled out a razor-thin 2-1 decision over Monroe Central's Ryan Richter to seal the title.

Bertubin topped Caldwell's Zac Cline by pinfall at 5:20 in the first round, Steubenville's Chris Tingler by a 10-3 decision in the second round and Morgan's Cam Westfall by an 8-4 decision in the semifinals.

The Bobcats continued their success at 125 pounds where Dillon Van Dyne defeated St. Clairsville's Dillon Nolle by a 9-3 decision in the championship bout.

Van Dyne defeated Barnesville's Chance Andrews by pinfall in 20 seconds in the first round, Clinton-Massie's Nolan Shelton by an 8-3 decision in the second round and Martins Ferry's Taylor Yoder by a 7-1 decision in the semifinals.

Rounding out the four champions was Barnesville's Kurtis Jefferis, who defeated New Lexington's Adam Fondale by a 12-5 decision in the final match at 152 pounds.

On his way to the title, Jefferis pinned Clinton-Massie's Nick Titcomb at 1:56 in the first round, defeated St. John's Carl Piper by pinfall at 2:41 in the second round and beat Cambridge's John Coleman by a 16-0 technical fall in the semifinals.

Jefferis earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler award for his efforts.

Caldwell's Clint Boyd was one of a pair of local second place finisher as he fell to Indian Creek's Brandon Staudacher by pinfall at 4:41 in the 140-pound division.

Cambridge's Tyler Berger placed second at 135 pounds, losing to St. Clairsville's Dominic Prezzia in the championship match.

There were a handful of local third place finishers at the meet.

Barnesville's John Barker defeated St. Clairsville's Michael Yockey by a 4-0 decision to capture third at 119 pounds.

Jacob Border of Caldwell won third at 125 pounds after Martins Ferry's Taylor Yoder forfeited.

Seth Todd, also of Caldwell, placed third at 160 pounds, defeating Union Local's Jacob Heam by a 4-1 decision.

Cambridge's Robbie Moten defeated Shadyside's Jerry Kahl by pinfall at 1:53 for third place at 189 pounds.

Local fourth place finishers included Barnesville's Quentin Castello (130), Cambridge's John Coleman (152), Caldwell's John Boney (215) and Caldwell's Tom Schenkel (275).

Barnesville finished 12th as a team with 62.5 points, while Shenandoah placed 18th with a score of nine points.
