Columbus State Senator Lou Gentile (D-Steubenville) reintroduced the Veterans Opportunity Bill on Tuesday, legislation aimed at providing Ohios veterans with educational and job opportunities when they come home. The bill seeks to establish a standardized system in which to award academic credit for veterans who have taken coursework or received specialized training while in the armed forces.

Our veterans have many skills and talents that they have acquired while serving our nation. We have an obligation to recognize those unique abilities and leadership qualities and assist our Veterans as they transition back into the workforce, said Senator Gentile. This legislation will allow Ohios Veterans to utilize their training and skills to become productive students and workers.

Besides implementing a standardized academic transfer system for prior coursework and/or training, the Bill also seeks to connect student veterans with prospective employers and alumni as they transition into Ohios workforce.

The Veterans Opportunity Bill will continue to be one of my top legislative priorities. I look forward to working in a bipartisan fashion with other members of the General Assembly and members of the Governors Executive Workforce Board in doing whats best for Ohios veterans, said Senator Gentile. It is only fair that we serve Ohios veterans as well as they serve us, and I am hopeful that this General Assembly will do just that.
