After research, it has come to our attention that 409 children in the Barnesville School District are receiving free lunch. That number is not including children receiving a reduced price lunch. On average there are approximately 100 children per grade level, so approximately one third of the children enrolled in the Barnesville School District are receiving free lunch. School was dismissed recently for summer break, and our concern is these children still need lunch during this time when school is not providing lunch. We will not turn anyone away no matter what their income.
Pastor Richard Cox, Pastor Andrew Woods and Bryana Bahmer are developing a Free Summer Lunch Program to be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays - Wednesdays are not necessary due to the BAMA (Barnesville Area Ministerial Association) free lunch and swim at the park. Mondays will be added if we think it will be necessary. Our goal is to start serving July 3, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
We need the support and help from the community to make this program a success for the children.
Donations and volunteers are needed at this time. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the lunches, help pass out lunches, and clean-up. You can volunteer as little or as much as youre able. We will have a sign-up chart that will easily keep track of the volunteers each day. Another idea is a church or community group/club could volunteer a whole week. We are still developing a menu and ideas are welcome.
Monetary donations are always needed. Lunch items needed are as follows (and the list will grow as we get closer to the starting date): sack lunch bags, juice boxes, fruit snacks, fruit, bread, peanut butter, jelly, hot dogs, buns, cheese slices, small water bottles, granola bars, cracker snack packs, small boxes of raisins, plastic sandwich baggies, lunch meat, etc.
Our mission is to provide a nutritious meal for these children at various locations in Barnesville.
Barnesville takes pride in helping the community and each other in their time of need. That is one of the many positives of living in a small town. If we all join together, we can help these children and nourish our growing youth.
