DOUBLY HONORED AT THIS year's Barnesville High School

DOUBLY HONORED AT THIS year's Barnesville High School Alumni banquet, the late Lodge Hanlon was inducted into the Barnesville Area Education Foundation Hall of Fame. Several remarked afterward, "I thought he already was in the Hall of Fame." I was one because, I remembered well at the banquet in 1988 the Foundation surprised Lodge by inducting him into this Hall of Fame. Then followed the questions: Was he just honored or was he inducted or was he honored by being inducted? IN COMPARING the two certificates, they show the standard format for inductees was used in 1988 and copied except for a few updates in the 2011 certificate. The only differences were in the heading, the earlier one using the word "honored" and the latter "inducted." Incidentally, all the other HOF plaques use the word "elected." THE ENTERPRISE account of the 1988 banquet had this headline - "Four Named to Education Foundation's Hall of Fame. It lists Frances M. Healy, educator, civic leader, humanitarian; Judge Isaac C. Parker, educator, legislator, judge who was popularly known as 'the hanging judge'; Dempsey O. Sheppard, beloved Barnesville physician and historian; and "In a surprise induction, kept secret until the night of the banquet, Lodge L. Hanlon, founder of the Barnesville Area Education Foundation, and its secretary-treasurer." Plaques for all four grace the halls of the Barnesville High School along with all other inductees' plaques. Now another Hanlon plaque will be added making him doubly honored. And who is more deserving? jeanealities is complied by Jean Palmer Davies, lifetime Barnesville Enterprise associate. She may be reached at jeandavies@comcast.net.
