Colonel Edward Fowler


Colonel Edward Holland Fowler, 92, of Somerset, Ohio, died at 5:40 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2008 at Morrison House Hospice in Zanesville, Ohio. Colonel Fowler was born January 6, 1916 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, the son of the late Ross D. and Mary Smith Fowler.

A graduate of Barnesville High School in 1933, he attended The Ohio State University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps at Chanute Field in 1935. His distinguished military career of over 40 years included all non-commissioned and commissioned grades through Colonel. He was graduated from the Staff and Command Air University. Awards and citations include Legion of Merit, U.S. Army Commendations, with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and Air Force Commendations. In civilian life, he was Mid-States Sales Manager of a specialty steel company prior to retiring in 1978 and moving back to the hills of Somerset with his wife of 69 years, Helen Bibart Fowler, formerly of Newark, Ohio. During retirement, Colonel Fowler could often be found with his wife, Helen, maintaining their yard and flower gardens. He kept up an active correspondence with childhood and military friends, as well as building model ships and electric train set-ups. Colonel Fowler also played both piano and organ. He was a member of the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, A. Sue Fowler of Somerset, Dr. Patricia A. (Garry) Keener of Indianapolis, Ind., and Linda Grow of Carroll, Ohio; five grandchildren, Mark Allen Shonk, Kristina Keener (Larry) Yeager, Leslie L. Keener, Nicholas E. Keener, and Robin Prosser; three great-grand-children, Chase, Trent, and Allison Yeager.

A private family graveside burial will be in Somerset Cemetery.
