It was announced on the national news that the U.S. Congress is looking at having a national sales tax to cover all of these socializing programs that the president wants as well as a new source of money to pay down the national debt.

In Canada this is called the Goods and Services Tax, in England it is called the Value Added Tax, both are simply different names for national sales taxations.

The figure that has been mentioned is 25%, so that is adding 25% more to each and every purchase that people make. Now add the state and local sales tax of 7% to this proposed national sales tax and we get stuck with a 32% tax on our purchases.

I am not sure about other people, but if my daily costs go up 32%, I will have to start giving up luxury items like food and gasoline.
