In response to President Obama's statement that we did not consider ourselves as a Christian nation" Could he have been referring to the U.S. government? If he was referring to the people of America, I respectfully disagree.

Christianity is what America was founded on. In the Constitution of the United States drafted (September 17, 1787) it references the Year of the Lord:

ARTICLE VII.
The ratification of the Conventions of Nine States shall be sufficient for the establishment of this constitution, between the States so ratifying the same.

Done in Convention, by the unanimous consent of the States present, the seventeenth day of September, in the YEAR OF OUR LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the twelfth. In witness whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names.

GEORGE WASHINGTON, President, (and Deputy from Virginia.
New-Hampshire. John Langdon, Nicholas Gilman.
Massachusetts. Nathaniel Gorham, Rufus King.
Connecticut. William Samuel Johnson, Roger Sherman.
New-York. Alexander Hamilton.
New-Jersey. William Livingston, David Brearley, William Paterson, Jonathan Dayton.
Pennsylvania. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Mifflin, Robert Morris, George Clymer, Thomas Fitzsimons, Jared Ingersoll, James Wilson, Gouverneur Morris.
Delaware. George Read, Gunning Bedford, jun. John Dickenson, Richard Bassett, Jacob Broom.
Maryland. James McHenry, Daniel of St. Tho. Jenifer, Daniel Carrol.
Virginia. John Blair, James Madison, jun.
North-Carolina. William Blount, Richard Dobbs Spaight, Hugh Williamson.
South-Carolina. John Rutledge, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Charles Pinckney, Pierce Butler.
Georgia. William Few, Abraham Baldwin.
Attest,..........WILLIAM JACKSON, Secretary.

IN CONVENTION, Monday, September 17th, 1787.

Year of the Lord

Why would the Constitution of the United States reference the "Year of the Lord," if America had not been a Christian nation back in 1787?

If you look at some of the most important points of history, you will find evidence which substantiates that America was founded on Christianity. Some people make reference against this point by quoting the (1797) Treaty of Tripoli that says that the U.S. government was not "founded" on the Christian religion.

My point exactly-- in the 1797 Treaty, it does not say that "America" was not founded as a Christian Nation, it is saying that the (U.S. government) was not founded on the Christian religion. There is a difference. They are talking about Government not We the People.

One Nation under God and In God We Trust

In 1864 which was sixty seven years after the 1797 Tripoli Treaty, the words IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the two-cent coin. I could state reference after reference where America as a People appeared to be a Christian nation.

There is no doubt in "today's America," there is definitely diversity in religious practices and beliefs-- however, research that was done by Pew Global Attitudes Project shows there is a relatively low percentage of people in America claiming to have, "no religious beliefs."

Which God?I read your short history lesson and it brought me to my opening question. Many lives have been lost throughout history because of differing opinions on who's God is the right God.Saying in your statement "was he refering to the government or the people"really confused me.We the people are the government.Freedom in this country is but a fleeting moment in time. The more the American people cry out for the government to do something
,the more freedom we loose. The rights we enjoy, freedom of speech, religion, the press,to bear arms, all were gained not by God but by the blood of those who died.I am sure some believed in Allah,Buddha, and the Spirits,so do not shout out,we christians made this country what it is today.

Back in the 50s, Ike, President Eisenhower, added "under God" to the U.S. Pledge of Alliengence on 7 February of 1954, on what was called Lincoln Sunday.

This was President Eishenhower's reaffirmation of the Christian Values that the United States stood for.
