Barnesville Middle School Library Celebrates "Right to Read" Week
"Right to Read" week is celebrated each year, May 11-15. This is a week to celebrate reading and to promote the message that students who read will be more successful at school and in life. The theme of the week was Celebrate the Freedom to Read: We Have a Right to Read. Among our rights are the right to read the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the other important documents that have shaped our history and that affect our future. This is every American's "Right to Read." We all should read a little (or a lot) daily. The colors for Barnesville Middle School Library's celebration were "Read", White and Blue. The emphasis was on the importance of reading and good citizenship.
Every day during the "Read", White and Blue day students participated in the following events;
Monday: This was the official "Read", White and Blue day where students wore our country's colors " red, white, and blue. Students were given a daily trivia question about history. Monday's question was; "This person saved the original draft of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Who was it?"
Tuesday: This was Camouflage Day. Students wore camouflage in support of our troops. The question of the day was; Who pioneered camouflage clothing?"
Wednesday: This was College Day. Students were to wear their favorite college or school sweatshirt/shirt. The question was; "What is the oldest College or University in the United States?"
Thursday: Thursday was Celebrate Dr. Suess Day. This was a silly hat day. Students wore hats to show that they knew that reading was "Where it's "Hat'" The question was; "Who is the author and illustrator whose honors include 2 Academy Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and the Pulitzer prize? You may know him as Dr. Suess, but what is his real name? What is the name of the first children's book that he wrote?"
Friday: This was Your Favorite Person in History Day. Students dressed in appropriate attire as famous persons in history. The trivia question of the day was; "I was born near Boston, Massachusetts in 1848. I was a skilled inventor. In 1881, I perfected the light bulb by adding a carbon-based filament to keep it lighted. Who am I?"
Students enjoyed answering the trivia questions during the week " hoping their class would have the most correct answers to win a prize.
The winning class for the trivia questions was Miss Johnson's class. They will have a pizza party.

1st Place " Gwen Reed " 7th Grade " Lunch at McDonalds
2nd Place " Samantha Burkhart " 5th Grade " Lunch at McDonalds
Runners Up;
Jordon Starr -- 6th Grade
Haylee Jones -- 6th Grade
Ryan Myers " 7th Grade
Winner for Famous Persons in History was;
Laura Rogers as Uncle Sam " Lunch at McDonalds
375 students enjoyed a few weeks of events and trivia for Right to Read Week. Reading is All American! We should all Read a Little Daily!
Our fun week was a joint effort of Mrs. Greenwood (BMS Librarian, Mrs. Koch (Literacy Specialist) and the principal, Mr. Wake.
