UHRICHSVILLE -- Not since the 1997-98 season has Barnesville claimed a boys' sectional tournament title, but Coach Chris Pack hinted at the outset of this season that was one of the main goals of this year's team.

Saturday night, the Shamrocks realized that dream with a 42-32 victory over the Ridgewood Generals in the Division III Sectional Tournament hosted by Claymont High School and promptly cut down the nets.

Barnesville (12-10) will now face West Muskingum, which got past St. Clairsville, 82-73 on Saturday, in the Division III District semifinals.

In a first half marred by a total of 26 turnovers, Ridgewood jumped in front with Kevin Davis burying a three-pointer to open the game. The Generals held on to the lead until a Bryson Stephen bucket and ensuing foul shot with 2:18 remaining gave the 'Rocks their first lead.

Davis responded with another "triple" to give Ridgewood the edge again, but Preston Dornon answered with a "three" at the other end to give the Shamrocks a two-point margin with under a minute to go. Thomas Ellis hit a bucket with just seconds left to send the teams to the second round deadlocked at 10.

"We got a lot of turnovers the first half, but we didn't get many points out of them," Pack stated. "I felt we had control of the game, but the scoreboard didn't show it."

In the second round, the Shamrocks scored the first five points to give them some separation and kept the General at bay to record a 13-8 scoring advantage and take a 18-13 lead to the intermission.

In a low scoring third quarter, the General cut the difference to three (20-17), but could get no closer as the 'Rocks widened the gap with a 10-6 scoring advantage to take a 28-19 lead to the final eight minutes.

"It seemed like Ridgewood hit some big buckets at the beginning of the third quarter," Pack observed, "but our lead kept growing. We made critical bucket after critical bucket and Bryson (Stephen) had some of those big buckets. We bent a little at that point, but we didn't break and we handled their press well.

"The main difference between tonight and against Shadyside," he added, "was that tonight we made the passes and got layups."

With a "trifecta" from Tyler Fitzpatrick at the 7:34 mark of the fourth frame, the Shamrocks pushed the margin to 10 points (31-21) and the closest the Generals could get the remainder was seven points at 31-24 at the 6:33 juncture. The 'Rocks pushed the difference to a high of 14 (40-26) with just 2:45 left and coasted to the 42-32 sectional co-championship win.

Barnesville sank 14-of-43 field shots for 32.6 percent and tacked on 11-of-27 from the charity stripe. Stephen and Preston Dornon led the way with 10 points each, with Dalton Smith adding eight and A.J. Bohandy getting seven. Smith also had five of the 10 steals and four of the five assists for the Shamrocks. Preston Dornon picked off three steals.

Ridgewood (11-11) shot a meager 20 percent from the field (9-of-44) and added 10-of-17 from the foul line, with no player scoring in double figures.

Hawthorne paced the Generals with seven points, while Stoffer, Davis and Ellis each added six markers. Stoffer and Hawthorne each handed out a pair of assists in the losing effort.

The Generals did record a 43-39 rebounding advantage, with Evan Jones pulling down 15 boards. Stephen completed a double-double with 10 caroms, while Christian Bailey and Fitzpatrick added eight rebounds each.

"We want to keep playing well," Pack offered. "If we play well and someone gets us, we will accept that. I am real proud of everyone and they worked hard for this. We believe the program is headed in the right direction."

In West Muskingum's win over St. Clairsville at Meadowbrook, Jordan Wilson tallied 20 points and Austin Brock had 16 for the winners (12-10). Dan

Monteroso and Dan Slavik tallied 28 and 26 points, respectively, for St. C.

Barnesville advances to the Division III District at New Philadelphia High School and faced West Muskingum Tuesday in an 8 p.m. semifinal contest. The first game at 6 p.m. features Garaway against Martins Ferry.

Both winners will return Friday at 7 p.m. to vie for the district championship and a berth in the regional.
