The Barnesville summer swim season got underway on Wednesday, June 10 at the Martins Ferry pool. The score of the meet was Martins Ferry 712 Barnesville 663.

"We did very well," Coach Bobbi Jo Johnson said. "Due to the depth of the pool, only the experienced swimmers went and I thought they could not have done better! The goal of summer league is to learn strokes and have fun and I think we are accomplishing that! Even the youngest of the swimmers that went looked good. Most of the eight and under swimmers are doing all four strokes," Coach Johnson said.

The Barnesville Summer Swim Team is a member of the Belmont County Summer Swim League and consists of teams from Martins Ferry, Barnesville, St. Clairsville, Warren Township and Moundsville Aquatic. This year's team consists of swimmers from the age of 3-18 with a total of 195 swimmers.

"It is amazing to see the interest in swimming. I think the kids realize that swimming isn't just splashing around and they want to learn. We try to make it learning with a little 'chicken dance' thrown in every once in a while," said Johnson. "We start practice with the 'wee 1,' then the 'wee 2,' so for everyone that thinks a three-year old is not tough, they are the ones in cold water at 8:15a.m."

Helping with practices this year with the young swimmers are: Lisa Gallagher, Jodi McFarland, Jill Loase and Becky Detling plus many older swimmers from the team.

First Time Crossers at the Martins Ferry meet were: Kyle Burkhart, Taylor Harry, Patrick Ross, Randall Ross, Hayden Wise, Sara Reynard, Mackensie Henry and Kinzee Ramsey.

Swimmers of the week were: Michaela Milliken- Michaela received "Swimmer of the Week" for several reasons. First, she swam an excellent last leg of the race in the 200 free relay, she finished fourth in breast, sixth in free and first in the fly and she volunteers with the little swimmers in the mornings. Owen Oliver is the other "Swimmer of the Week." Owen also did a great job in the 100 free relay and he tried new strokes and he works very hard in practices.

The Barnesville Summer Swim Team will host their first home meet on Wednesday, June 17, starting at 6 p.m. at the Barnesville Park.
