ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A Barnesville man found guilty of injuring an animal so badly that it had to be euthanized was sentenced recently in Belmont County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Frank Fregiato sentenced Denver Woodburn, 55, to one year in prison — the maximum sentence possible.

The Belmont County Sheriff’s Office responded to Woodburn’s home for a domestic call in August. When they arrived, they found a dog that was severely injured. The deputy’s report said Woodburn attempted to cut the dog’s foot off.

Woodburn is the second person in Belmont County to be prosecuted under Goddard’s Law which make it a felony five offense for anyone to "knowingly cause serious physical harm to a companion animal."
