No matter where you go or what you do, there are safety precautions that you have to abide by in order to have a safe and enjoyable experience. Of course, this common safety trend carries over in sports, or at least that’s what you’d think. Baseball and softball are two sports that share similar characteristics, including the safety rules. In order to prevent a head injury while batting, the batter must wear a helmet; this is a very obvious safety requirement that is practiced in both sports, and not many people will question its purpose. However, there is a very important rule trying to surface in the baseball and softball communities that is carrying a decent amount of controversy in its path. This new rule would require players in the field to wear defensive face masks, but not everyone is accepting this concept with open arms. Many people say that a face mask will interfere with the player’s line of sight and will make the player appear weak, but, in fact, face masks have less blind spots than the typical batting helmet, and face masks allow the player to feel safer and more comfortable on the field. These defensive masks create a sense of security and safety for the players and allow them to play without fear. Face masks would significantly decrease the risk of getting injured while in the field and can help prevent a serious injury, and as we all know, head injuries can be fatal. Defensive face masks provide a level of safety that everyone should want their family members and loved ones to have.
