Two people died in a one-crash late Tuesday night in Wayne County’s Canaan Township, in which authorities say their car went off the road and rolled over multiple times.
According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP), Shannon J. Wharton Sr., 49, of Burbank and Erica J. Umstead, 38, of Orrville died after the crash, which occurred about 11:36 p.m. Tuesday.
The crash remains under investigation, but the initial report said that Wharton and Umstead were traveling west on Pleasant Home Road when their purple 2003 Suzuki XL-7 SUV went off the north side of the road, struck an embankment, went airborne and rolled over multiple times. The car came to a rest in a hay field, and the crash ejected both Wharton and Umstead from the car, according to the release.
Authorities believe drugs contributed to the crash, according to the release.
The Wayne County Coroner’s Office pronounced both Wharton and Umstead dead and transported them to the Wayne County Morgue.
In addition to OSP, Canaan Township Fire and EMS, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and North End Garage also responded to the scene.
