ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Sayrs and Executive Dean of Regional Higher Education Bill Willan have appointed Dr. Robert Klein as interim dean of Ohio University’s Eastern Campus, effective July 1, 2018.
Klein, Associate Professor of Mathematics, was the interim associate dean of Ohio University’s Lancaster Campus and Pickerington Center. Previously, he served as the undergraduate chair of mathematics in the College of Arts & Sciences at the Athens campus, where he focused on mathematics education and technology. He earned his doctorate in mathematics teacher education from the Ohio State University.
"Dr. Klein’s outstanding record of service to Ohio University gives me great confidence in his ability to lead the Eastern Campus," Sayrs said. "In his more than 13 years at OHIO, Dr. Klein has shown a commitment to student success and learning, as well as a focus on community-building and inclusion, which are central to our institution’s mission. Dr. Willan and I look forward to working with him in this new capacity."
Klein will serve a one-year appointment at Ohio University Eastern, which will end June 30, 2019. He succeeds current Dean Paul Abraham, Ph.D., who is finishing a five-year term at the Eastern Campus and will return to the Lancaster Campus on July 1 to reprise his role as associate dean.
Dr. Klein said, "I am grateful to be given the opportunity to work with the faculty, staff, and students of the Eastern campus. Every day they share their talents with students and affirm Ohio University’s vision to provide the highest quality educational opportunities to the region’s students. This is exactly the kind of institution I want to serve, and I hope to support and grow those efforts. I also want to thank Paul Abraham for his dedicated service to Ohio University Eastern and look forward to continue working with him as he moves to Ohio University Lancaster."
Abraham’s accomplishments at the Eastern Campus include a highly successful, year-long 60th Anniversary celebration, highlighted by the Gala in October, where it was announced that over $300,000 had been raised for new scholarships, and the Women in Leadership event held in April.
He is also credited for increased partnership with Belmont College on RAPIDS workforce development grant funding and associate to bachelor degree advising agreements; joining into the Ohio Valley Higher Education Research Consortium of regional colleges; facilitating regional partnership with Tech Growth Ohio resulting in the annual Shark Contest for area college students; serving as the initial lead for the regional STEM Learning Ecosystem cooperative with several area school districts, businesses and community agencies; and serving as president of St. Clairsville Sunrise Rotary.
"I am very thankful for the opportunity to lead Ohio University Eastern," said Abraham. "I especially enjoyed increasing connections with the community and creating new opportunities for current and future students at OUE. I now look forward to returning to and working with faculty and staff at Ohio University Lancaster upon completion of my assignment at the Eastern Campus."
