The Village of Barnesville was the lone bidder at a Belmont County Tax Certification Sale June 13 for the former Barnesville Hotel property, 117-119 E. Church Street. The village’s $19,177.88 bid was the minimum price required to make the purchase.

Belmont County Auditor’s records listed the owner as local native Ruth Smith Jarvis of Canton, GA, who purchased the property along with the former Barnesville Elks Lodge several years ago for a rooming house. County records list the property’s assessed value as $55,690 although the 2008 bicentennial history book indicates the property was then vacant following a major fire in February 2005.

Dr. D.O. Sheppard states the property was erected in 1923 by Mrs. Orilla Ladue. In 1938, following her death, the hotel was purchased by Charles Reed of S. Lincoln and run by the Reed family for a number of years.

Fred Graves and several other owners followed, the hotel primarily serving as an extended lodging and resident hotel.
