WallacePancher Group, St. Clairsville, recently completed a year long project for the Rivendale Patio Garden for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pirates Charities at PNC Park. The project started as a combined idea by the Pittsburgh Pirates to feature food grown at the ballpark for their premium area concessionaire, Levy Restaurants and by WallacePancher Group’s Director Gabe Hays.

Design started during the 2017 season and was completed for a spring 2018 installation. The design called for foods that could be featured in dishes served at the ballpark, sustainable materials and practices, and an artful layout of space for growing, education and events. The layout features a variety of fruits and vegetables grown in very large containers made of recycled steel. A recycled steel rainwater harvesting tank provides water for the garden from an adjacent rooftop. Louisville Slugger bats were custom made for the pirates to serve as the tomato stakes and bean tee-pee. Finally, a local builder, (Smith’s Sawdust Studio of Bethesda, Ohio) created a greenhouse potting shed for tool storage.

Rivendale Farms, owned by Thomas Tull, is the sponsor of the Rivendale Suite Level at PNC Park. Rivendale contributed the vegetables for the large "Rivendale Planter" that is featured within the Garden. Other project partners include the Western PA Conservancy who wrote the verbiage for the signage, Grow Pittsburgh who is helping to maintain the Garden, Brenkle’s Greenhouses who grew the plants, and Levy Restaurants’ Executive Chef Adam Holt who will use the food grown in dishes prepared at the ballpark.

The installation was completed the week of May 7th with a grand opening event on May 15th featuring remarks by Bob Nutting from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jake Seltman from Grow Pittsburgh, and Christine Grady from Rivendale Farms.

WallacePancher Group would like to thank the wonderful folks at the Pirates and Pirates Charities for the wonderful leadership, and camaraderie in making this project a reality.
