FAIRVIEW — A 73-year-old man is dead after brandishing a firearm at Guernsey County sheriff’s deputies executing a doctor’s order to convey him to a mental health care facility at the man’s Fairview home Sunday afternoon.
The fatal shooting occurred approximately an hour after deputies arrived at the home, at which time the male engaged them in a stand-off that ended when deputies fatally shot him.
Authorities declined to identify the male prior to press time Monday.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered by Guernsey County Coroner Dr. Sandra Schubert at the Licking County Coroner’s Office.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched to the residence at approximately 4:45 p.m. to transport the male to an undisclosed hospital after a doctor ordered treatment for threats allegedly made by the man to harm himself.
The doctor was reportedly from Barnesville Hospital.
"Upon making contact with the male, he was non-compliant and refused to exit the residence," said Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden.
The male initially spoke to deputies through a screened window, but deputies were eventually able to enter the home.
"As deputies attempted to de-escalate the male’s behavior for nearly an hour, he ultimately brandished a firearm, pointing it at the deputies," said Paden. "Deputies responded to the threat with deadly force, resulting in the death of the male."
Two deputies were inside the residence during the call, according to the sheriff. The identities of the deputies have not been released by the sheriff’s office.
No deputies were injured during the incident. The press release did not indicate if one or both deputies fired shots.
Nobody else was at the residence at the time of the shooting.
"An investigation is pending at this point, as with all officer-involved shootings," said Paden.
The type of firearm brandished by the male was not available as of press time.
Fairview is located in eastern Guernsey County near the Belmont County line.
No additional details were released prior to press time. The shooting remained under investigation by authorities.
