The Barnesville American Legion Post 168 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 2792 would like to thank everyone who made this year's Memorial Day program one of the best that we've ever had! We were especially moved to see so many people from the community join us at the Veterans' Memorial Plaza to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The preparation for this year's services actually began the prior weekend that involved many volunteers that wanted to make an extra special effort to honor all who have served by placing the American flag on veterans' gravesites. With so many cemeteries, this can sometimes take days, but since we had a large number of helpers this year, we accomplished it in half the time! We were especially thankful for the boys and girls that showed their patriotism and appreciation and lent a hand. Thank you to Al Neiswonger, Silas Tindall, Connie Bunting, Dave Bunting, Chad Taylor, Benny Ankrom, Charlie Heath, Wayne Butler, Mary Butler, Nancy Wehr, Justin Wehr, Nick Wehr, Nathan Wehr, Gretchen Keylor, Beth Wehr, Karlee Wehr, Kaylee Wehr, Kelli Wehr, Landon Wehr, Ryland Wehr, Adrienne Burkhart, Brock Burkhart, Natalie Burkhart, Julie Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, and Steve Carvin.
As the Color and Honor Guards were leading the parade on Memorial Day, the plaza was just beginning to come into view. I cannot express the overwhelming sense of pride I felt as we turned the corner to see so many people joining us to pay tribute! It was truly a sight to see! From the musical performances of the Barnesville Girl Scout troops and the Barnesville Community Alumni Band to the moving words of our special guest speaker, Green Beret SSGT Mitchell Rataiczak; Lauri Gibson, Legion Auxiliary; Betty Grey, VFW Auxiliary; and Madelyn Skinner, 2017 Miss Poppy, we hope that everyone truly enjoyed this years' program. We hope to bring back our community's traditions and extend our services with each following year. Special thanks goes to Dave Bunting for coordinating this year's program, Barnesville Mayor Dale Bunting, Barnesville Police Department, Barnesville VFD, Belmont County Sheriff's Department, and Rev. Gene Miller. May God bless America!
