BARNESVILLE -- As the victims continue to recover, police reportedly believe an altercation, and not drugs, led to a shooting in the village nearly a week ago.

While patrolling late Tuesday near Franklin Street, an officer heard gunshots. Investigating on foot, he reportedly observed two automobiles leave the scene. He followed them to Barnesville Hospital, where he located two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims -- whose names have not been released by authorities -- were flown to a Pittsburgh hospitalized following initial assessment and stabilization at Barnesville Hospital. Investigators have been unable to question the victims.

Though no arrests have been made, police have identified three "persons of interest" in the shooting, which remained under investigation.

Police reportedly did question and release a male who was present at the residence where the shootings occurred, but was not injured.

Village police are reportedly working with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation as well as the Belmont County Sheriff's Office in an effort to determine a motive for the shootings.

In the meantime, police ensure residents the shooting was not random, and the public remains safe.
