Barnesville Middle School sixth grader Lexi Johnson  (left) was the first place winner in the spelling bee held Thursday, Nov. 14 at the school. Johnson took the lead by correctly spelling “ragamuffin” and won with the word “vestigial”. The runner-up was eighth grade student Winnie Haney (right). Both will represent the school at the County Spelling Bee on February 6 at Ohio University Eastern at 7 p.m. The Barnesville Spelling Bee Coordinator is Denise Leach. Participants included: 8th grade, Sarah Powell, Abby Starr, Hannah Burkhart, Haney and Drew Strauss; 7th grade, Braden Schaffer, Natalie Butler, Kali Milhoan, Erin Hannahs and Alee Wise; 6th grade, Jacob Maleski, Lani Shepherd, Johnson, Hailey Baker and Nathan Burkhart and 5th grade, Kaitlyn Roe, Evan Hudson, Chloe Mankin, Kaleigh Finnical and Emma Wharton.
The County Spelling Bee is sponsored by The Times Leader and Riesbeck’s. The National Bee is held in Washington, DC in June.
