MALAGA -- A Jerusalem, Ohio, man was killed Thursday afternoon when the riding lawnmower he was operating was struck on Route 145 in Monroe County after he failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming truck.

Joseph Gallagher, 85, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Neither the driver of the truck, identified as Michael Aberegg, 24, Beallsville, nor the passenger, Tyler Brown, 24, of Barnesville, were injured.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m.

According to an Ohio State Highway Patrol report, Gallagher was eastbound on County Road 39 operating a John Deere X540 when he turned onto Route 145.

The lawnmower was struck by a 1994 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck driven by Aberegg, which was northbound on Route 145.

Gallagher was ejected from the lawnmower upon impact with the truck. He was reportedly traveling between properties he mows in the area.

Extensive damage was reported to both the truck and lawnmower. Monroe County Coroner Jay Seidler assisted with the investigation.

The accident remained under investigation by the patrol's St. Clairsville post.
