Family roots bring surgeon to Barnesville

Born and raised in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Keith Knupp, M.D. and his wife of 37 years, Colleen, have desired to get back closer to home and Barnesville has provided them with that opportunity. According to Dr. Knupp, "Both the town of Barnesville and the rolling hills of the area remind us of growing up in Pennsylvania." Recently joining the Medical Staff at Barnesville Hospital, Dr. Knupp will be providing general surgical services to patients at Barnesville Hospital.

Dr. Knupp received his Medical Degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia. Dr. Knupp is Board-Certified by the American College of Surgeons.

Interestingly, his career in medicine began long before attending medical school. Dr. Knupp spent four years in the United States Air Force as a Medic. "I was working in an emergency room in Washington, D.C. along side of surgeons and at that time I really didn't like surgeons," states Knupp jokingly. After the military, Dr. Knupp attended college at WVU and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Like most college students, he needed money. Therefore, Dr. Knupp found himself working as an operating room technician at a local hospital. "I knew nothing about being an O.R. Tech but the hospital trained me. I loved working in the O.R. assisting with procedures." states Dr. Knupp. "It was then I decided I wanted to be a surgeon."

After completing his residency, Dr. Knupp and his family relocated to the Dayton, Ohio area where he began his surgery career with a private practice. Later, Dr. Knupp joined the Dayton VA Medical Center providing surgical care to our country's Veterans. While in Dayton, Dr. Knupp was the Chief of Surgery at Upper Valley Medical Center and also at the Dayton VA Medical Center. He is also the Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University.

Dr. and Mrs. Knupp have three sons and three grandchildren and always look forward to spending time with their family and friends. They also enjoy camping. Dr. Knupp enjoys hunting and woodworking, while Mrs. Knupp enjoys participating in church activities.

Dr. Knupp's office is located in Suite 109 at the Barnesville Medical Center and can be reached at 740-425-5232.
