Poor third quarter does in ‘Rocks in 76-64 defeat

Barnesville suffers tough road loss

MOUNDSVILLE, WV — A rough third quarter proved costly to Barnesville High on Tuesday night in dropping a 76-64 setback to host John Marshall High.

After a deadlocked 17-17 tie after the opening quarter, the ‘Rocks surged into a 37-29 halftime lead with a 20-12 scoring edge in the stanza.

But in the third quarter, the Monarchs unleashed a huge rally with a 29-8 points edge to grab a 58-45 lead heading into the final period of play.

“We just couldn’t get anything going in that third quarter,” Barnesville coach Chris Pack explained. “They sat back in a zone defense, and we made some very poor decisions that ended up with them getting a lot of easy buckets.”

Barnesville managed a slim 19-18 edge in the fourth quarter, but the rally was not enough to overcome the poor third quarter.

Junior Zach Houston led Barnesville with a 22 point effort, while senior Dylan MacMillan and junior David Stewart each finished with 14 points. Senior Brandon Burkhart just missed double figures with eight for the ‘Rocks.

Tanner Filben pumped in a game-high 30 points to pace John Marshall (6-15), with Evan Mager adding 14 and Derek Och checking in with 10 for the Monarchs.

With the loss, the ‘Rocks slip to a season mark of 7-14.
