Five wrestlers from Caldwell, three from Barnesville and one from Shenandoah advance to the Division III District by claiming top four finishes in the Barnesville Sectional on Saturday.
Sandy Valley took the team title by the narrowest of margins, finishing with 180.5 points to 179 for runner-up Tuscarawas Valley. Caldwell finished in third place with 146 points followed by Shadyside (142), St. Clairsville (135), Martins Ferry (125), Steubenville Catholic (90), River (88), Barnesville (84.5), Monroe Central (84), Union Local (66.5), Toronto (62), Beallsville (45.5), Malvern (33), West Muskingum (31), Bellaire (26), Shenandoah (21), Bridgeport (9.5) and Tuscarawas Catholic (8).
Caldwell boasted two individual champions in junior Kameron Rayner and senior Kale Rayner.
Kameron Rayner took the top spot at 138 pounds, enjoying a 4-0 tournament to improve to 39-5 on the year while Kale Rayner won the 170-pound division, also going 4-0 to carry a 34-3 ledger to the district.
Coach Tom Brown’s Redskins also had three other place-winners. Senior Jared Leasure took second at 182 pounds with a 3-1 mark, improving to 38-4 on the season; junior Tyler Wiley was third at 126, going 3-1 to improve to 38-9; and senior Caleb Van Meter finished third at 160 with a 5-1 record, boosting his mark to 37-8 entering the district.
Barnesville’s trio of district qualifiers is headed by freshman Hobie Howiler, who captured the 120-pound title with a 4-0 mark to improve to 38-5.
Also advancing for the Shamrocks were sophomore Collin Wilson, who was second at 106 with a 3-1 mark, improving his record to 28-7; and freshman Taylor Griffin, fourth at 132 after going 3-2 to improve to 27-13.
Shenandoah’s lone representative at the district will be senior Landon Tomcho, who finished fourth at 126 pounds with a 3-2 record, giving him a season mark of 32-11.
