Barnesville girls win sixth against Caldwell

Thanks to a strong first quarter start, Barnesville High picked up its sixth win of the season by defeating Caldwell, 56-44, in the only local girls basketball game on Thursday.

Coach Jamie Carpenters Lady Shamrocks came out of the blocks quickly with a 23-10 lead after the opening round, and BHS used a 15-11 edge in the second quarter to open a 38-21 halftime advantage.

The Lady Rocks boosted the lead 50-27 after three rounds before Coach Ashley Schafers Lady Redskins came charging back in the fourth with a 17-6 edge to trim the final margin to a dozen.

Shayla Markovich and Miranda Plumly led Barnesville (6-11) with 13 points apiece while Paige Huntsman was right behind with 12.

The Lady Shamrocks connected on 23-of-67 field goal attempts (34.3 percent) and 7-of-17 free throws (41.2 percent) with 48 rebounds and 24 turnovers. Lane Hanlon led the BHS rebounders with 10; Marissa Burga collected nine and Plumly and Markovich each had five. Hanlon also dished out four assists while Plumly had four steals, Burga four and Markovich three.

For Caldwell (2-15), Lexy Schell led the offense with 14 points. Megan Devol and Schell both had six rebounds while Ciarra Petry had five boards and four thefts.

The Lady Skins hit just 13-of-60 action shots (21.7 percent) and 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) at the charity stripe with 37 boards and 22 miscues.

Elsewhere, Frontier at Buckeye Trail and Shenandoah at River games were postponed. The Shenandoah-River game will be made up Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Hannibal while the Trail-Frontier make-up date has not been finalized.

NEXT Both teams are in action Saturday, Caldwell at home against St. John Central at 1 p.m. and Barnesville at St. Clairsville starting at 4 p.m.
