Union Local hands Barnesville sixth consecutive loss

Published:

MORRISTOWN — Visiting Barnesville High suffered its sixth consecutive loss with a 59-56 setback at rival Union Local on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

The Shamrocks (4-9) enjoyed a superb opening quarter, posting an 18-7 lead. Union Local responded, however, with a 19-11 advantage in the second, creating a slim 29-26 Barnesville lead at the half.

The third period proved to be the killer, as the Jets doubled up their guests, 20-10, to head into the final frame with a seven point cushion, at 46-39. A 17-13 Barnesville advantage in the final quarter left the ‘Rocks just short at the final horn.

Three-point shooting proved critical for UL, as they connected on nine ‘treys’, including four from the game’s leading scorer, Jacob Bailey, who led all players with 24 points.

The Jets finished with 22 field goals, just two better than the Shamrocks. Barnesville converted 12-of-17 charity tosses, but those numbers could not cancel out the Jets’ three-point shooting prowess.

Kyle McDiffit joined Bailey for UL in double figures with 10.

Dylan MacMillan and Brandon Burkhart paced the Barnesville scoring with 17 and 16, respectively.

Union Local managed a slim 26-24 rebounding edge. Burkhart grabbed eight caroms for the Shamrocks.

Ball handling was stellar for each team, as they combined for just 13 turnovers.
