ST. CLAIRSVILLE —The Barnesville high school girls basketball team will face Caldwell Wednesday, February 15, 6 p.m. at Union Local High School in the opening round of the division IV sectional tournament.
The Shamrock boys team will also play at Union Local, when they enter sectional tournament play. The ‘Rocks will face Frontier at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference crowned its five girls¹ basketball champions Saturday at Ohio University Eastern.
The day began with Morgantown Trinity Christian picking up its first-ever OVAC championship, winning the Class 1A title with a 47-37 victory over Weirton Madonna.
Wheeling Central then upended Shadyside, 37-34, to win the Class 2A crown; Fort Frye topped Monroe Central, 50-34, in the Class 3A championship; and Edison captured Class 4A honors with a 48-35 win over Union Local.
The Wheeling Hospital OVAC Boys’ Basketball Championships get under way Tuesday with semifinal action slated in all five classes.
The semifinal pairings include No. 4 Conotton Valley at No. 1 Weirton Madonna and No. 3 Morgantown Trinity Christian at No. 2 Beallsville in Class
1A; No. 4 Shadyside at No.1 River and No. 3 Steubenville Catholic at No. 2
River in Class 2A; No. 4 Barnesville at No. 1 Magnolia and No. 3 Shenandoah at No. 2 Fort Frye in Class 3A; No. 4 Steubenville at No. 1 St. Clairsville and No. 3 Harrison Central at No. 2 East Liverpool in Class 4A; and No. 4 Wheeling Park at No. 1 Morgantown and No. 3 Parkersburg South at No. 2
Indian Creek in Class 5A.
The winners will play Saturday at OU Eastern, with the Class 1A at 9:30 a.m.; Class 2A at 12:15 p.m.; Class 3A at 3 p.m.; Class 4A at 5:45 p.m.; and Class 5A at 8:30 p.m. The semifinal losers will square off Friday at the home of the higher seeded team to determine third place.
