Jessica Hunkler capped her career at Barnesville High in style, pouring in 36 points to lead the Lady Shamrocks to a 62-44 triumph over Weir in an OVAC consolation game Thursday.
Hunkler nailed 14 field goals, including seven three-pointers, en route to her career-high effort. The seven ³threes² tied the BHS single-game mark of Chelsey Keylor and Tricia Hines.
“Hats off to Jess for the way she played in her last game in this building,” said Barnesville coach Jamie Carpenter.
Barnesville led 14-11 after one quarter and 28-26 at the intermission before an 18-9 surge in round three opened a 46-35 advantage and a 16-9 edge in the fourth sealed the outcome.
Devvyn Hunkler provided Hunkler’s top support with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady ‘Rocks finished with 20 rebounds and six turnovers.
“We moved the ball well offensively and got everybody involved,” said
Carpenter. “All four seniors scored in their last game, so that was nice.”
Alyssa Shingle led Weir (6-14) with 13 points while Shelva Burns had seven.
“Defensively, we picked it up in the second half and Shingle - who had 35 against Bellaire - only scored two points in the second half.”
The win was the fifth in the last six outings for the Lady Shamrocks after an 0-14 start.
“If somebody said could start 5-1 and lost the last 14 or have it go the other way and start 0-14 and win five of the last six, this is how we’d wantto be playing at tournament time,² said Carpenter.
