MORRISTOWN — A two-game winning streak by the Barnesville Lady Shamrocks came to an end Thursday as the host Union Local Lady Jets recorded a 55-39 win in the “Hangar.”
The two teams battled to a draw at eight points each the opening quarter, but Union Local jumped into a lead it would never relinquish the second round with a 13-9 scoring edge to take a 21-17 lead the locker room at the halftime break.
The Lady Jets (15-3) won both the second half quarters by differences of 18-11 and 16-11, respectively to roll to the victory.
Union Local outgoaled the Lady ’Rocks 17-13 and added 17-of-22 from the foul stripe. Dallas Montag led four Lady Jets in double figures with 16 points followed by Kayla Doty with 14, Amanda Swallie with 11 and Cori Medley with 10 markers. Medley and Montag each connected on a pair of three-pointers.
Barnesville (3-15) was led in scoring by Jessica Hunkler with 19 points, including three treys, while Devvyn Yager added 10 with one from behind the arc.
The Lady Jets posted a 30-24 advantage on the glass with Doty pulling down seven, while Miranda Plumly grabbed off five caroms to lead the Lady ’Rocks.
Buckeye Trail, 52
Caldwell, 32
OLD WASHINGTON — A pair of strong middle quarters propelled the host Buckeye Trail Lady Warriors to a 51-32 Pioneer Valley Conference win over the Caldwell Lady Redskins on Thursday.
The teams played an even initial quarter, with each putting up 10 points. The Lady Warriors then forced separation the second round by outscoring the Lady ’Skins 15-5 to take a 25-15 lead at the halftime break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Lady Warriors continued with a hot hand while Caldwell continued to struggle scoring as Buckeye Trail posted a 14-4 edge to carry a commanding 39-19 lead to the final eight minutes.
Hannah Jones then sparked the Lady Redskins in the final round with a three-point and three deuces to lead the visitors to a 13-10 scoring advantage to cut the difference to the 51-32 final.
Buckeye Trail (7-12, 3-9 PVC) hit 20-of-56 floor attempts for 35,7 percent and added 11-of-13 from the foul line. The Lady Warriors got balanced scoring, with LeeAnna Sichina leading with 13 points and Linda Fisher close behind with 12 markers. Catie Smith and Kayleigh Smith chipped in eight points each. The hosts had nine assists, with Catie Smith handing out five. The Lady Warriors had just six turnovers.
Caldwell (4-16, 1-11 PVC) struggled from the field, shooting just 28 percent 12-of-43 and tacked on just 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. Jones led the way for the Lady Redskins with 19 points, with Lexy Schell handing out two assists. The visitors were guilty of 19 turnovers.
The Lady Warriors also won the rebounding battle by a 27-24 tally, with Fisher completing a double-double with 10 boards and LeeAnna Sichina added six. Maggie Tilton paced Caldwell with five rebounds.
NEXT — Buckeye Trail visits Cambridge on Wednesday, with reserve action beginning at 6 p.m., while Caldwell is idle until the sectional tournament.
Shenandoah 46,
Monroe Central 41
WOODSFIELD — Visiting Shenandoah outscored the host Monroe Central Lady Seminoles 30-25 the second half Thursday to snap a halftime tie and escape with a 46-41 Pioneer Valley Conference win.
The Lady Zeps jumped out to a 12-7 lead the opening quarter, then managed just four points the second frame, while the Lady ’Noles scored nine to knot the score at 16 going to the locker room at the intermission. Shenandoah then utilized the foul line the second half converting 20-of-26 in the final two quarters to outscore Monroe Central 13-10 the third stanza and 17-15 the final eight minutes to grab the 46-41 win.
Shenandoah (11-7, 7-5 PVC) only put up 25 field goal attempts and connected on 11 for 44 percent, but made up the field goal difference with a 24-of-30 effort from the charity stripe. Raechel Rossiter led the Lady Zeps with 15 points followed closely by Carissa Wukelich with 14, while Sami Schott chipped in five points. Renee Schwieterman paced the Lady Zeps in both steals and assists handing out two of the five assists and grabbing three of eight steals. The visitors were guilty of 15 turnovers.
Monroe Central (13-5, 11-7 PVC) made 15-of-48 floor shots for 31.25 percent but added just 7-of-16 bonus tosses. Chelsie Tewonger paced the Lady Seminoles with 12 points with Demitra Habig following with 10 markers. Casey Digity and Chelsie Roberts added eight points each. Kelsey Parks paced the Lady ’Noles in both assists and steals picking off four of the 14 steals and dishing out five of the 12 assists. Tewonger added four assists and the hosts were guilty of 14 miscues.
The Lady Zeps posted a slim 20-19 advantage in rebounds led by Caralee Wukelich with five and Rossiter with four. Habig paced the Lady Seminoles with six boards and Roberts added five caroms.
