Local Memorial Day observances planned

Barnesville -- The annual Memorial Day program on Monday, May 29, 2017. This year a formal precession has been added that will begin at the Dairy Queen on East Main Street and will conclude at the Memorial Plaza. Members of the American Legion Post 168, VFW, color guard, honor guard, police force, fire department, Girl Scouts, and the Barnesville Community Alumni Band will be participating. Motorized vehicles are prohibitied. The public is also invited to participate be a part of this precession.

Anyone participating in the precession will assemble in the Dairy Queen parking lot by 10:30 a.m. The march will begin at 10:45 a.m. with the program beginning at 11 a.m.. The Legion Auxiliary will be hosting a luncheon immediately following the services in the upper banquet hall of the American Legion.

Belmont -- Parade units will assemble on Brown St at the Belmont School at 9 a.m. The Legion unit with assemble at the head of the route at the junction of Fair and Brown streets.

The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m., led by Belmont Police unit, American Legion and the Union Local band. At 9:50 a.m. the American Legion Post 3312 will post Colors at the podium in the Belmont Cemetery and the ULHS band will play selected patriotic music.

The invocation will be given by Rev. Teresa Bobot at 10 a.m., followed by the introduction of Belmont Mayor Stan Sobel by Legion Commander Ed Blon. At 10:10 a.m. the Legion will conduct a rifle salute. At 10:15 a.m., the ULHS band will play TAPS, followed by the Star Spangled Banner.

At 10:20 a.m. the speaker, Bob Farmer, will be introduced.

The service will conclude at 10:40 a.m. with a benediction by Rev. Bobot.
