Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society will meet in the St. Clairsville Public Library's meeting room, 108 W. Main St., at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 8. Guest speaker will be Morristown resident and former Belmont County Sheriff, Tom McCort. The topic of his talk will be "The Folklore of Morristown and the National Road Area."
A devoted member of the Morristown Historic Preservation Association, Tom's interest in history and genealogy began when he was a child, listening to his grandfather tell stories of his youth and many adventures. Moving to Morristown provided more opportunity to converse with the village elders and to learn more of the local history. He often cites the accomplishments of Barnesville native, Judge Isaac C. Parker, whose work on the bench in Arkansas earned him the moniker "The Hanging Judge." Tom has long advocated for local recognition of Judge Parker, lobbying for the Belmont County Jail to be named after this stalwart of the judiciary.
All CTGS meetings are free and open to the public.
