Barnesville Exempted Village School District Transportation Director John Blattler informed the Board of Education at its Tuesday, April 18 meeting that the Ohio Department of Transportation had worked with him to postpone the closure of State Route 800 North of Barnesville for a culvert replacement until late May to avoid delays in school bus transportation.
"I wasn't aware of it. I made some calls today and they shuffled some things around to help us out," he said. "That would have involved two routes and that's pretty tough for us to add 15 minutes to two routes so that we can go around that, so they worked with us. That's taken care of."
Blattler said all of the old school buses have been decommissioned and he was waiting on the paper work to come back from Cardinal so that he could file with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Athletic Director and Food Service Coordinator Mark Cook said the district received a $20,000 grant for the high school. The application was prepared by Superintendent Angie Hannahs and Treasurer Matt King. Cook said equipment ordered included a six-burner range, a new serving line with sneeze guards and cold wells and a hot well to meet Ohio Department of Education standards. He said they were ordered from National Equipment in Wheeling and would arrive and be installed after this school year ends.
Other summer projects include the resurfacing of the track the first week of June.
The final phase of the Scholastic Sports marketing agency's campaign to raise funds for the gym will conclude with the resurfacing of the middle school gym floor in July. The high school and elementary school floors will be redone after the middle school per the maintenance agreement. Cook said not all three gyms will be shut down at the same time so there will be access for sports conditioning.
Board member Robert Miller asked about the fencing around the track which was falling down in some places. Blattler said he had obtained and estimate to replace the fence, but in the meantime it would be repaired by the maintenance department to finish out the school year.
Barnesville Elementary School Principal Clint Abbott said it was a very busy time of year with state testing, field trips, and activities. He said the third grade would be going to the Wheeling Jesuit Science Center for the first time, the fourth grade to Marietta and the second grade went to the one-room school house near St. Clarisville and would be having a wild wet lands demonstration at the park. The mile run was held for first through fourth grade and the annual field day will be held at the park on May 9 and 10. Abbott said Kindergarten registration was scheduled for May 19 at 9 a.m.
He said the testing was ongoing and he hoped that the hard work of the staff and students would show in the test results.
High School Principal Micah Fuchs said testing was also ongoing there and the first round of ELA I and II was finished. He reported that computer issues that plagued the district the first time, causing them to opt for pencil and paper testing last year, had been resolved and the testing went well compared to past experiences. He also said he was hopeful scores would continue to represent Barnesville well.
Fuchs said scholarship applications and other graduation preparation activities for the seniors were wrapping up.
The board went into executive session to consider employment,; preparing for, conducting or reviewing negotiations or bargaining sessions with public employees concerning their compensation or other terms and conditions of their employment; and matters required to be kept confidential by federal law or regulations or state statutes.
The board approved architectural/engineering services at a cost of $20,000, pending review of the contract through Kelly Architectural Services for the construction of a bus garage.
The board accepted the resignation of Chris Pack as high school head boys' basketball coach effective April 14, and approved him as a volunteer assistant girls' basketball coach.
The board issued the following one-year supplemental contracts for the 2017-2018 school year pending all required paperwork is completed and on file: Chris Hannahs, assistant football coach; Jamie Carpenter, head girls' basketball coach; Justin Little, assistant girls' basketball coach; Jayson Stephen, head wrestling coach; Rick Milhoan, assistant wrestling coach; Bobbi Jo Johnson, head swim coach.

Superintendent Hannahs said curriculum for English was looked at with a representative from each grade level providing input on updating materials. She said several companies sent sample materials and came in and gave demonstrations. Hannahs said the teachers selected the Houghton Mifflin Harcort teacher and student resources. She said the district would not be billed until fiscal year 2018.
The board approved Jennifer Helmick as substitute aide, cook, secretary for the 2016-2017 school year pending all required paperwork is completed and on file.
The board awarded a seven-hour educational aide position (currently assigned to the Elementary School) to Mercy Phillips effective beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, and a seven-hour educational aide position (previously a temporary position and currently assigned to the Middle School) to Jeanne Strawn effective April 18, 2017.
The board approved the Student Protection Agency as the student insurance carrier for the 2017-2018 school year.
The board adopted Resolution #17-13, adopting a Calamity Day Alternative Make-Up Plan.
The board approved the following dates for Summer Programs with the number of positions filled being contingent upon student enrollment and paid at the rate of $25 per hour: Elementary Summer School July 10 through July 28, 2017; Elementary Summer Accelerated Reader Program Monday, June 5 and every Monday thereafter through July 10, 2017; Elementary Transition to Kindergarten - July 31through August 4, 2017; Middle School Summer School July 24 through August 11, 2017; High School Summer School OGT Summer School, June 12 through June 16, 2017; EOC Summer School, July 17 through July 28, 2017.
The board approved the following dates for the Extended School Year Special Education Services with the number of positions filled being contingent upon enrollment and paid at the rate of $25 per hour: Preschool Special Education Services dates upon agreement; School Age Special Education Services July 10 through July 28, 2017; Speech and Language Services July 24 through August 14, 2017.
The board approved the list of seniors for graduation, provided they satisfactorily complete all requirements set forth by the Barnesville Board of Education with no pending fines, fees or disciplinary actions.
The board approved the FFA trip to the Ohio FFA Convention in Columbus, Ohio, on May 3-5, and the FFA trip to Springfield, Missouri, for the Grasslands Grazing Contest on June 3-10.
