On Saturday, April 29 Barnesville Hospital, Morristown Pharmacy and Ohio Hills Health Services will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Unwanted medications will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Morristown Pharmacy parking lot.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.
Keeping unused prescription medications at home creates a public health and safety concern, because they can be accidently ingested, stolen, misused and abused. Area residents are encouraged to bring unwanted and expired medications to this event for safe disposal. To ensure patient confidentiality cross out the patient's name on prescription drug labels, however if possible leave the name of the medication visible.
"Prescription painkillers are responsible for the largest number of opioid overdoses in Ohio," said Joe Jeffries, R.Ph., Pharmacy Director, Barnesville Hospital. "Drug addiction is an unfortunate epidemic that continues to gain momentum in our region. Community members can help by safely disposing of unwanted medications that they have in their homes."
The event will accept over-the-counter medications as well as prescription drugs and even pet medicines. Hospital staff and a law enforcement official will supervise the collection in order to accept expired controlled substances.
Barnesville Hospital and many area pharmacies now have permanent medication and syringe drop boxes so you can dispose of medication and syringes at any time which is convenient for you. Barnesville Hospital's box is located by the main entrance between the double doors.
The Pharmaceutical Take Back Program is sponsored by Barnesville Hospital, Morristown Pharmacy, Ohio Hills Health Services and the Junior Women's Club. This event provides a great opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinets, safeguard you home, and to preserve our environment for future generations. Everyone is welcome regardless of where medications were purchased. However, medications cannot be accepted from businesses such as nursing homes and doctor's offices.
