ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The trial date for a Union Local teacher accused of inappropriate sexual contact with an 18-year-old student has been scheduled for Sept. 12 in the Belmont County Common Pleas Court.
Tiffany Ann Cordes, 27, is facing one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, for the alleged incident at an off-campus location. She also faces offenses involving underage persons that occurred in February.
An initial pretrial hearing for Cordes was scheduled for July 31 during her arraignment hearing Thursday and her bond was continued at $5,000.
Cordes faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of the offense. She also faces a Tier III sexual offender classification requiring her to report to the sheriff's office every 90 days for the rest of her life.
Cordes was been banned from having intentional contact with the male victim or Union Local High School students. The charge against Cordes is based on her position of authority with students.
The incident reportedly occurred in the male's truck while the pair was picking up materials to construct backdrops for the Union Local prom. The investigation that led to the felony charge against Cordes reportedly began after the mother of another Union Local student alerted authorities.
Cordes is currently on paid administrative leave. Her teaching license could also be revoked by the State of Ohio if she is convicted.
